A Preview of the Phillies’ Bullpen
Very late last night around 11:30, there were rumor’s floating around about free agent J.C Romero, who was not offered a contract after the 2010 season, to return to the Phillies organization in 2011. The deal was finally settled around 12 in the morning, bringing in the lefty for 1 year, for 1.1 MM, (pending physical) which was not exactly what he was asking for, but he took it anyway. I, along with many others, assume this deal was brought up after the Dennys Reyes deal fell through.
Danys Baez, Antonio Bastardo, Jose Contreras, David Herndon, Brad Lidge, Ryan Madson, J.C Romero, Vance Worley, Mike Zagurski. That is our current bullpen.
I have two problems with this: Bastardo and Zagurski in the big leagues.
Bastardo in 2010: 2-0, 5.14 ERA, in 7 IP he allowed 13 hits, and 4 ER, walking 1 batter, and striking out 13.
Zagurski in 2010: 0-0, 10.29 ERA, in 7 IP he allowed 8 hits, 8 runs, 8 ER, and 1 homerun. He walked 5 batters, and struck out 11.
As for Jose, Brad, and Ryan, we all know that they’ve got everything down, and we can indeed rely on them if needed.
Danys Baez however, I’m a little concerned about. I won’t get into detail about his stats, because we know that he’s an in-between pitcher, meaning that we want him in the ‘pen, but when he’s on the mound, we find ourselves yelling “TAKE DANYS OUT ALREADY!”
David Herndon is definitely another pitcher that we need in the ‘pen, but we won’t see him as often as we would see Chad Durbin (who I really think should have been re-signed by now!)
And finally, there’s Vance Worley, who is in the running for the 5th starter spot, along with Kyle Kendrick. In Vance’s two starts, he proved to us that he is indeed worthy of taking over the 5th spot in the starting rotation, but it’s all up to Charlie Manuel and Rich Dubee, who will be keeping a close eye on the two likely starters this spring training.
